Each tier can have its own set of rules and rewards that define how members earn, progress, and receive benefits. The Rules tab is where you configure everything from welcome bonuses to automatic tier upgrades.

Navigating to the Rules Tab

From Customize > Tiers at dashboard.getpocketpass.com/customize, click on a tier card to open its configuration page. Then select the Rules tab. The rules are organized into collapsible sections for easy navigation.

Welcome Reward

Set a welcome reward that members receive automatically when they first sign up or are assigned to this tier. This is typically a credit amount added to their balance as an incentive to join your program.

Birthday Reward

Configure an annual birthday reward that members receive on their birthday. This reward is applied once per year and requires that the member has a birthdate on file. If no birthdate is recorded for a member, the birthday reward will be skipped.

Anniversary Reward

Set an anniversary reward that members receive on the anniversary of the date they joined your membership program. This is a great way to recognize and reward long-term loyalty.

Loyalty Earning Rate

Define how members earn rewards based on their spending. The loyalty earning rate is configured as earn $X for every $Y spent. For example, you might set members to earn $1 for every $20 spent.

This feature requires a sales channel integration to track member purchases. Without a connected sales channel, spend-based earning cannot be calculated.

Spend Thresholds

Configure automatic tier upgrades based on cumulative spend. When a member's total spending reaches the defined threshold, they are automatically promoted to a higher tier.

For example, you might configure that members who spend $500 are upgraded to Gold, and members who spend $1,000 are upgraded to VIP. Thresholds are evaluated against the member's cumulative spend within the configured spend period.

Spend Period

Set the evaluation window for spend thresholds, defined in months. This determines the rolling period over which cumulative spend is calculated. For example, a 12-month spend period means only purchases within the last 12 months count toward tier upgrade thresholds.

Expiry Rules

Define inactivity expiry rules that trigger a tier downgrade when a member has not made a purchase within a specified number of days. This encourages ongoing engagement and prevents inactive members from holding premium tier status indefinitely.

Downgrade Tier

When a member is downgraded due to expiry or failing to meet spend thresholds, you can specify which downgrade tier they are moved to. This is typically your base or default tier, but you can configure it to any active tier in your program.

Custom Benefits

Add a list of custom benefits as text descriptions that are displayed on the back of the wallet pass for this tier. These are free-text entries that let you communicate the perks of the tier to members. Examples include:

  • 10% off all purchases

  • Free birthday dessert

  • Priority booking access

  • Exclusive member events

Members see these benefits whenever they flip their wallet pass to the back, keeping your value proposition front and center.

Tips

  • Start with a generous welcome reward to encourage new signups and immediate engagement.

  • Make sure members have a birthdate on file if you want birthday rewards to work — consider making it a required field on your signup page.

  • Set realistic spend thresholds that motivate members without feeling unattainable.

  • Use the spend period to match your business cycle — a 12-month window works well for most businesses.

  • Keep custom benefits concise and compelling so they are easy to read on the pass back.

  • Review your expiry rules periodically to ensure they balance engagement incentives with member retention.
